KDP Barcode and ISBN Guide
A retail barcode must scan reliably and correspond to the edition being sold. Reserve an uncluttered region on the back cover and decide who will supply the barcode before final export.

Choose how the barcode is supplied
Depending on the workflow, the publishing platform may place a barcode from the edition ISBN, or you may provide one in the cover. Do not accidentally include two barcodes.
Preserve contrast and quiet space
Keep the bars sharp, high contrast, and surrounded by the required clear area. Avoid placing them over detailed imagery, gradients, texture, folds, trim risk, or essential back-cover copy.
Match the correct edition
Paperback and hardcover editions generally need distinct ISBN records. Confirm that any supplied barcode encodes the ISBN assigned to that exact format, imprint, and edition.
Frequently asked questions
Can the barcode go anywhere on the back cover?
It should remain inside the publisher’s permitted zone and safe area with sufficient quiet space; the lower back is conventional, but the exact template governs placement.
Should I put a price in the barcode?
Only if your distribution workflow specifically requires and supports it. Many print-on-demand workflows manage price through listing metadata instead.
